Big Island Beach, Nova Scotia - KAP 2013-11
April 21, 2013.
Big Island Beach is essentially a sand dune connecting Big Island with mainland Nova Scotia near Merigomish. With there being a road down the middle, which is valuable to the residents on Big Island, there is erosion prevention in the form of large rocks and an attractive but disintegrating breakwater for part of the length of the beach. This was my first session with my recent upgrade to a Panasonic Lumix GX-1. As with my previous session on this trip to Atlantic Canada, my video downlink is broken so I am shooting without the benefit of video feedback. The morning started with a strong wind and ended sooner than preferred when I decided that the increasing power of the wind was going to defeat me if I went much longer. In the end I had to anchor the line to one of the posts of the breakwater and walk the kite down with a pulley. I had planned to try some higher altitude shots. I had also planned to change to horizontal format. I started with vertical format as I thought the long, thin appearance of the beach dune would be shown better as vertical.
These photographs were taken using a remote-controlled camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography - KAP).
